Eero Saarinen’s 1957 Pedestal Series is one of the most iconic of the mid-20th century design. Created to rid interiors of the “slum of legs”, this Finnish designer turned the interior design world on its ear with this revolutionary creation. Though he initially wanted to use plastics, the large range of furniture associated with the Pedestal Series was developed with cast aluminum. The range included chairs, side tables, coffee tables, and dining height tables. Eventually, Saarinen experimented with the design of furniture and created other types of tops for the Pedestal Series and even an ashtray that was used in the TWA Terminal at John F. Kennedy Airport.
